Bannockburn PTA Meeting Minutes January 15 , 2015

The Bannockburn Elementary School PTA met on January 15, 2015 at the Bannockburn Elementary School. PTA Co -­‐ Presidents, Janice Dreier and Laura Miller cal led the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

In attendance: There were 37 participants including members of the PT A Board and Principal Kate Bradle

Welcome and PTA Co -­‐ Presidents’ Report

  • Discussion of items to be purchased with PTA surplus: As seen in the handout, Ms. Dreier explained the reason for the surplus and Mrs. Bradley presented the items requested.
  • On the recommendation of Janice Dreier and the motion of Mr. Rehm, seconded by Ms. Noonan, the list of items to be purchased with the surplus funds of $26,780 was approved by voice vote
  • Ms. Dreier presented the Minutes of the November 5 , 2014 PTA Meeting. On her recommendation and the motion of Ms. Maurer, seconded by Ms. Blanchard, the minutes were approved by voice vote as distributed with no correction. PTA Committee Reports

Treasurer:

Nancy Browning presented the Treasurer’s Report and reported that Craft Night income has not yet been reported. The Treasurer’s Report is available online at: http://www.bannockburn‐pta.org/aboutourpta/treasurersreports.html.

Cluster Representatives:

Susan Eagle reported that the each Cluster presented a wish list to the Board of Education. The Whitman Cluster’s priority is overcrowding at Pyle MS and Whitman HS. There will be a feasibility study with a 5-year timeline to assess the overall space at Pyle MS. The Westbard Project new development could also impact the Whitman Cluster

Staff Appreciation Committee:

Laura Miller announced the Staff Appreciation Week in May.

Before & After School Activities:

Liz Lester reported that the Clubs w inter session began January 12 and will continue for 8 weeks. There are 14 clubs with 180 students participating.

Fundraising:

Heather Kraus announced Bingo Night will be on January 23 at 6:30 at Pyle Middle School. Bingo Cards will be $10 per card or $25 for 3 cards. There will be prizes, Potomac Pizza, and the 5 th Graders will sell Krispy Kreme Donuts. There are still volunteer openings and middle school students can earn SSL hours. Leila Afas and Catherine Bise announced the Parent Auction will be on February 21 at 8 PM at Bannockburn Clubhouse . Donations can be received until February 1. Admission is $10 per person or $20 per couple. Volunteers are needed to help cle an up after the event .

Social Events :

Stephanie Pelmoter announced the next social is the Mayfair.

In-School Activities:

Mike Smith announced Math Day will be on February 6. Valqu iria Rey and Marisol Blanchard announced the inaugural International Night on March 12. The activities and food will reflect our school’s diverse community.

Community Service

Shefali Srivastava spoke on behalf of Jill Holland. Ms. Srivastavar eported many successful community services projects, including the Manna Food Drive, Help the Homeless Walk with 177 registered walkers, don ating 20 bags of clothing to benefit the D.C. General Shelter, donating 14 boxes of books to benefit Turning the Page and 4 boxes to the BES Media Center, 50 cards created at Craft Night to distribute to children undergoing treatment at the NIH, Toys for Tots, and donating more than 10 bags of winter clothing to our sister school, Brown Station ES in Gaithersburg. Ms. Holland expressed much gratitude to her committee members and acknowledged their dedicated service.

Principal’s Report

Principal Bradley reported that the Chromebooks distributed to the 3 rd and 5 th Grade students are used daily . 4 th Graders are being introduced to the Chromebooks as well. Each student has a Google Chrome account which can be used at home. Each Chromebook is equipped with security measures and email can be received only from mcps.org or google.net. The students are learning about internet security and protocol. The PARCC Assessment will be administered on the Chromebooks. Mrs. Bradley discussed the PAR CC Assessment. There will be a PARCC Information Night on February 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Montgomery Blair HS. The meeting was adjourned at 8:24 p.m .
