Special Meeting to Approve PTA Bylaws – May 20 @ 7:30PM

The PTA will host a VIRTUAL General Membership meeting to approve our bylaws 7:30-8pm, Tuesday, May 20th on Zoom (see Zoom meeting information below).
As a member of the Free State PTA, we are required to adopt new bylaws every three years. We have also been directed by both the Free State PTA and the MCCPTA (Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations) to use the updated template provided by the Free State PTA. The updated Free State template is very similar to what BES PTA used during our last update in 2022 and the additional language we have suggested is generally consistent with existing bylaws.
2025 proposed updates include:
- Changing the titles for Vice President of: “Communications” to “Communications and Membership”; and “Diversity and Inclusion” to “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”
- Eliminating the role of Vice President of Education.
- Stating that the term of Treasurer shall be 2 years and all other offices 1 year.
- Clarifying that the president can serve a second term if there is no alternate candidate. But that President, President-Elect, President Emeritus shall not be eligible to serve more than two terms in the same position, consecutive or otherwise.
- Clarifying that any materials purchased with PTA funds should be returned to the PTA.
The 2022 BES PTA-adopted bylaws (i.e., our existing bylaws) can be found here and the 2025 BES PTA draft bylaws can be found here. Please note that the highlighted language in the 2025 BES PTA draft bylaws indicates our changes to the new Free State PTA template, NOT to our 2022-adopted bylaws.
Requirements:
- We must vote to approve the bylaws & send them to Free State PTA by June 1st.
- We must have a quorum of 10 PTA members to hold the meeting to vote.
- 2/3 of those present must vote in the affirmative to approve the bylaws.
