Recap: MCCPTA’s Math Night on New Math Standards for K-12

Summary: Maryland adopted a new math policy in 2025 to improve student learning and address wide achievement gaps. These changes affect what students learn, how they are supported, and how families receive information about progress.

What’s Changing in K–8 Courses (beginning SY 2026-27)

  • MCPS is adopting a new K–8 math curriculum for implementation in SY 2026–2027. It is important that MCPS invest in a high‑quality, externally developed curriculum aligned with the new state standards, rather than creating materials internally.
  • Most math topics will stay the same, with some shifts in which grade skills are taught.
  • There is a new focus on numeracy: understanding numbers, explaining thinking, and using math in real life.
  • Parents will receive math progress updates twice a year, separate from report cards.
  • MCPS will also need to support teachers with ongoing professional development, training, coaching, and planning time to ensure smooth implementation.

Linked are the presentation as well as a summary of the meeting/Q&A. Also, a reminder that MCPS will be hosting a meeting on the upcoming math changes this Thursday, February 5, 2026 from 6:30-7:45pm. More information and the Zoom link can be found here.
